A Different Approach to the Humanoid Robot

The Galileo SH1 takes a different approach to humanoid robotics than a conventional bipedal system. Instead of using two robotic legs, it combines a human-like upper body with dual arms and a wheeled mobile base. This design sacrifices the ability to walk over stairs or rough terrain, but wheels can offer a simpler and more energy-efficient way of moving around suitable indoor environments.

At approximately 1.72 metres tall and 80 kg, the SH1 is a substantial mobile manipulation platform. It has 24 total degrees of freedom, while each arm is rated for a maximum payload of 5 kg. Galileo lists a movement speed of 1.5 m/s.

The combination makes the SH1 particularly interesting for applications where a robot needs to move around a relatively structured environment and then physically interact with objects using its arms. Galileo itself positions the robot for industrial and service scenarios, while professional robotics suppliers additionally identify logistics, research and industrial automation as relevant application areas.

Manipulation, Perception & Computing

Manipulation is central to the SH1's design. The robot has two arms, each with a specified maximum single-arm payload of 5 kg, and supports several types of end effectors. These include a conventional 2-finger gripper as well as 3-finger and 5-finger dexterous-hand configurations. The 3-finger option can also be configured with tactile sensing. This gives users more flexibility in adapting the robot to different object-handling and research tasks.

For environmental perception, the SH1 is listed with two depth cameras and a chassis-mounted 3D LiDAR. Processing is handled onboard using an NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin 64 GB platform, with the specification listing 275 TOPS of AI performance.

The robot also supports Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, along with OTA updates and secondary development. Taken together, these features make the SH1 more than simply a mobile dual-arm machine: it is also designed as an expandable robotics platform that developers and integrators can build applications around.

SH1 vs Galileo GH1

The SH1 and GH1 represent two quite different approaches within Galileo's humanoid robotics lineup. The GH1 is a full bipedal humanoid with articulated legs and 31 degrees of freedom, designed around human-like whole-body mobility. The SH1 instead uses a wheeled base with dual manipulation arms, giving it 24 degrees of freedom and avoiding much of the mechanical and control complexity involved in bipedal walking.

That distinction also changes where each robot makes the most sense. The GH1 is the more human-like mobility platform, particularly where research into bipedal movement and full-body humanoid behaviour matters. The SH1 is more focused on practical mobile manipulation: moving efficiently across suitable flat surfaces, reaching objects with two arms and carrying out manipulation-oriented tasks.

The SH1 also offers around four hours of stated runtime and a 5 kg maximum single-arm payload, while its configurable grippers and dexterous hands reinforce its focus on interacting with objects.
