Why Humanoids? The Logic Behind Figure's Human Form

Why design a robot to look like a human? It's all about fitting into the world we've already built. Standing at 5'6" (approx 1.7 m) and weighing 70 kg (approx. 154 lbs), this robot mirrors human dimensions and weight because our environments—from tools to workspaces—are tailored for us.

In addition, with advanced AI and human-like hands, Figure 02 (the latest version as of August 2024) can easily handle tasks like opening doors, manipulating tools, and performing jobs that once seemed too complex for machines. This means it can jump right in where other robots might struggle, using its form and intelligence to make our lives easier. But there's more to this humanoid than meets the eye, so let's dive into what makes Figure truly special.

AI That Grows: The Learning Brain Behind Figure Humanoid

Thanks to partnerships with OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Microsoft, this humanoid is equipped with advanced AI that enables Figure to do more than just follow orders. It understands what you say, learns from its surroundings, and even corrects itself when needed. OpenAI's technology adds another layer, making Figure a conversational companion capable of meaningful dialogue. So, it's not just about sorting packages or assembling parts—Figure gets better at such tasks over time, learning and improving from each experience.

Built for Tomorrow: Figure's Role in the Modern Workforce

Figure is designed with the future workforce in mind, especially when it comes to tackling labor shortages and those risky jobs that are just too dangerous for humans. With the ability to carry up to 20 kg, a battery life of up to 5 hours, and a speed of 1.5 m/s, this humanoid is built to handle all it takes to do an entire work shift. It can lift heavy loads, work in hazardous areas, or cover shifts when finding workers is challenging; so it is here to support and enhance human capabilities, not replace them.

The Path Forward: What Lies Ahead for Figure

Getting humanoid robots like Figure into the mainstream won't be easy. There are still big challenges, like perfecting its balance and getting people comfortable with having robots around. But Figure AI is committed to making it happen. Their goal? To build a future where robots and humans work together, each improving the other. Right now, Figure is mainly focused on industrial jobs, but they've got big plans. They see a future where these robots could be in our homes, too, helping out with everyday tasks.

Figure in Action: Real-World Success Story

Figure humanoids are already starting to make a real impact; for example, Figure 02 has been put to the test at BMW Manufacturing, where it handled AI data collection and training tasks all on its own. Over several weeks, it autonomously managed tasks like inserting sheet metal parts into fixtures, which were then assembled as part of car chassis production. This isn't just a proof of concept; it shows how humanoid robots like Figure can really boost efficiency and productivity across different industries.

Brief History

Figure AI, founded in May 2022 by Brett Adcock, is quickly making a name for itself in the robotics world. Based in Sunnyvale, California, the company is focused on developing humanoid robots that perform tasks just like humans, but with greater precision and consistency. Their team, which includes experts from leading tech firms like Boston Dynamics, Tesla, and Google DeepMind, achieved dynamic bipedal walking with their first humanoid, Figure 01, within just one year.

Backed by $675 million in Series B funding from major players like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Jeff Bezos, Figure AI is on a mission to tackle global labor shortages and boost productivity in industries such as manufacturing and logistics. Their latest creation, Figure 02 introduced in 2023, is designed to seamlessly integrate into the workforce, bringing advanced dexterity and mobility to challenging tasks.
