Top 5+ Qualities (by addoobot)

What we find to be the top qualities of the Comau’s Racer-5-0.80 COBOT:

  • Dual Industrial and Collaborative Operation: Can transition between collaborative operation and full industrial-speed motion when integrated with the required safety system.
  • High-Speed Performance: Reaches up to 500 mm/s in collaborative mode and up to 6 m/s in non-collaborative mode.
  • Precise and Repeatable: Its ±0.03 mm repeatability supports accurate handling, assembly and inspection work.
  • Certified Collision-Detection Function: Safe Collision Detection is rated PL d, Category 3 and certified by TÜV Süd.
  • Compact Industrial Design: Its 809 mm reach is intended for restricted spaces and automation cells where floor space is limited.
  • Integrated Wrist Services: Ethernet, digital I/O and pneumatic connections near the wrist can reduce the need for external dress packs.
  • Clear Operator Feedback: A multicolour LED stripe makes the robot’s operating mode and status immediately visible.
  • Hand-Guided Teaching: A dedicated enabling button supports manual guidance of the robot during appropriate operating modes.
  • Flexible Mounting: Floor, wall and ceiling mounting allow the robot to fit different cell layouts.

Applications and Real-World Uses

Racer-5-0.80 COBOT is suited to applications involving relatively light components and tools within its 5 kg payload and 809 mm working reach. Comau has demonstrated it handling boxes and loading an AGILE1500 mobile robot, as well as working in a collaborative assembly station where it identifies, picks and positions small mechanical components before an operator completes manual steps.

The robot is also supplied as part of Comau’s MI.RA/OnePicker solution for vision-guided piece picking, kitting and sorting. In automotive manufacturing, Comau paired Racer with an EDIXIA vision system to inspect gap-and-flush alignment points on moving vehicle bodies. European project applications have also combined it with a mobile platform for pick-and-place, warehouse automation, glue dispensing, non-destructive inspection and mechanical-part handling.

These examples show that Racer is not limited to one process. Its main strength is supporting handling, assembly, packaging and inspection workflows that benefit from both industrial performance and controlled human access.

How the Dual-Speed Collaboration Works

Racer’s standout feature is its ability to combine collaborative and conventional industrial operation within the same automation cycle. When the safeguarded area is clear, the robot can operate in non-collaborative mode at Cartesian speeds of up to 6 m/s. When the presence-detection system identifies an approaching operator, the cell can switch the robot to collaborative operation, where Comau lists a maximum Cartesian speed of 500 mm/s.

This automatic behaviour is not provided by the robot arm alone. Comau’s brochure specifies that the function requires a controller option and an installed safety device. Its application examples use equipment such as laser scanners or radar sensors to monitor operator proximity. A status LED communicates the active operating mode, while a wrist-mounted enabling button supports hand guidance.

Fenceless or collaborative operation therefore depends on the complete application—including its sensing system, end effector, workpiece, programmed movements and risk assessment.

Racer-5 COBOT Compared with Comau MyCo Cobots

The Racer-5 COBOT and MyCo family approach collaborative automation differently. Racer-5 is a single specialised 5 kg model built around the ability to combine collaborative operation with full industrial speeds of up to 6 m/s. It is particularly relevant where cycle time is important and the robot must alternate between operator interaction and fast unattended movement.

MyCo is Comau’s newer and broader general-purpose cobot family. It includes six models covering payloads from 3 kg to 15 kg and reaches from 590 mm to 1,300 mm. Comau emphasises quick installation, graphical programming, force-control functions, ROS/ROS 2 integration, rapid redeployment and optional IP66 protection across the MyCo range.

In practical terms, Racer-5 COBOT is the more specialised high-speed dual-mode option, while MyCo provides more model choices and a more conventional, flexible cobot ecosystem for general collaborative automation.
