Designed for Hazardous Industrial Work
Elfin-Ex is designed for processes where an ordinary robot could introduce an unacceptable ignition risk. Typical examples include liquid painting, powder coating, fuel handling, petrochemical work and production areas containing combustible dust.
Spraying is one of its main applications. The six-axis arm can follow curved and irregular surfaces while maintaining a repeatable spray path. Huayan documents deployments involving furniture painting, vehicle-bumper spraying, wheel-hub coating, gearbox powder spraying and cylinder-component spraying. The robots can also be integrated with positioners, external axes, spray-gun systems and 3D vision equipment.
Huayan has additionally developed an automated refuelling system based on the E15F. In that application, the cobot is combined with vision, specialised end effectors, an external axis and software for identifying a vehicle’s fuel-cap position and manipulating the fuel nozzle.
Other stated sectors include civil explosives, petrochemicals, coal-mining areas, flour production and automotive manufacturing. However, suitability cannot be decided from the industry name alone. The exact gas, vapour or dust, area classification, temperature limits and local certification requirements must be checked for each installation.
How the Explosion Protection Works
The Elfin-Ex does not simply place a conventional cobot inside a heavier outer shell. Huayan uses a positive-pressure protection system intended to keep potentially explosive gases and dust away from electrical and mechanical ignition sources inside the robot.
Protective gas is supplied to the robot enclosure, creating pressure above the surrounding atmosphere. The design also uses multiple seals and isolation of potential ignition sources. A built-in pressure sensor monitors the protection system while the robot is operating. If the required pressure is lost or becomes abnormal, the system provides protective power shutdown rather than allowing the robot to continue operating without the intended protection.
The complete installation depends on the chosen controller. With the standard configuration, both the arm and explosion-protected control cabinet are intended for the hazardous area covered by their certification. With the economic configuration, only the arm has the positive-pressure explosion-protection function, so the control box must remain in a safe area.

Elfin-Ex vs Other Huayan Robotics Cobot Series
Compared with Huayan’s other cobot ranges, Elfin-Ex is designed for hazardous gas and combustible-dust environments, with explosion protection and an IP66-rated arm. The standard Elfin Series is intended for general automation tasks such as handling, assembly, welding and inspection, while Elfin-Pro adds force sensing, AI vision and internal wiring for more advanced force- and vision-guided applications. The S Series focuses on higher payloads and longer reach for palletising, heavy handling and large machine-tending tasks.
